Jumping straight in….
The first thing that struck me with this ep was it gave Dean a taste of how he used to be....saving people; hunting things. He even has to keep an eye on Sam as well. Okay…so he’s working for a demon now. When has their life ever been perfect!!!
It was also a nice change of pace and gave us bit of a break from the continuing relentless angst. A really nice little Monster of the Week ep.

I loved the first scene where we see Sam and Dean eating at the Rib Shack. It was all bright and sunny…such a contrast to the dark scenes we seem to get more and more of. I took this as a bit of a hint of the lifting of the blanket of doom that’s been pressing down on the boys.
Crowley is never far away though to give the boys a hard time and we get him turning the screw a bit more and not giving them much choice. Dean is tested as he has to watch Crowley burn Sam’s hand but doesn’t take long to comes up on Sam’s side. I wonder what Sam’s actually thinking when he sees Dean caving into Crowley for his benefit. Being soulless doesn’t mean he’s lost his ability to reason, so he’s gradually seeing the benefit to keeping on Dean’s good side.
In the Impala Sam tries to convince Dean that he’s still his brother. You can see Dean acknowledging it but he’s not convinced.

Rise and shine Dean! I know you don't need much sleep...but you're going to get even less now with a brother who doesn't need any!

Lovely view there of your jeans covered butt Dean.

Still looking good in those suits boys…mighty fine.
I enjoyed the whole skinwalker storyline. It had enough little interesting twists and turns to make it more than just a filler ep. Plus I liked the continuing idea of something or someone orchestrating the whole demon/monster thing. I’m happy for that to be slowly unfolding.
After having his own family for a year…it’s obviously changed Dean’s attitude. a lot. I like the less gung-ho Dean, he now thinks twice before taking out the monster…something that Sam would normally done back in Season 1 and 2. Someone has to be the conscience in the team and it seems a natural progression for Dean that it should be him. It was never going to be easy for him to take a mother away from her child and serve her up to Crowley but when Sam asked if he could do it and he said he could but I have to wonder. I think this changed Dean would definitely have had to consider all the alternatives first before he did though.

And then there’s badass Sammy…love him. On the roof it makes total sense that he would tell Dean to shoot regardless of putting the mother and child in danger. He has no soul so why should he care if it gets the job done? And when he adds that he would double cross them if he were Cal I think Dean’s now realising what that really means in terms of how he has to deal with Sam. I think once Dean gets used to the idea and that he really doesn’t have much of an option, he’s going to enjoy keeping an eye on Sam…it’s going to be like the old days… big brother looking out for Sammy again. Not with his young innocent reluctant brother but this weird new eager dangerous one.

Sam having a plan B. I love a man with a plan. And Robo!Sam going into the warehouse with gun blazing looking hotter than Hades. Guh! That’s never going to get old.

Oh Dean...blimey! Stop looking like that *fans self* ......I love your brother.

Nice shot of Jared here with the animal shelter poster on the wall.

Go to Hell!
I couldn’t help think about the lack of special effects with the skin walkers transformation. Not that it’s necessary but you kind of expect some cool transformation scenes. Mind you that head shot of Dean’s was pretty spectacular. And it’s now pretty obvious that there’s a lack of the usual classic rock. I suppose like everywhere…lack of funds is the reason. When you consider how many great actors make an appearance this season plus I’m sure Jared and Jensen had a pay rise. I can live with that although I miss it.

There’s something so reassuring seeing them sitting at a table by the water having one of their end of the day chats. And now that Sam’s finally coming clean with Dean and Dean feels that Sam’s being honest with him…as honest as a soulless guy can be… it looks as if the going is about to that much easier.
There’s a couple of things that makesme wonder why Sam is bothering to stay with Dean. He doesn’t feel anything for him…so why? He’s survived for a year without him and he's well aware that Dean isn't going to give him an easy ride.
My thinking goes two ways here:
1. It’s as straightforward as Sam said…he needs Dean help and as he said there's something in his memories that tells him he’d be better off getting his soul back…and for that he needs Dean. When Sam said he was that ‘other Sam’ for a long time…the look on Dean’s face..ouch! I could feel his pain! I wonder if we’ll ever find out which memories touched him so much.
2. There’s a sinister reason he’s decided to attach himself to Dean…. maybe to keep an eye on him for Crowley or someone equally evil.
I have to believe it’s the first option…..just because!

What? Soul or not, that’s funny.

Already been…didn’t agree with me

Date: 2010-11-19 07:03 pm (UTC)You're two theories are excellent. To add my one cent in, my theory is that even though Sam doesn't feel anything for Dean, he remembers Dean and how he use to feel about him. It seems like they may have taken the soul out of Sam, but they can't take away his deep and strong attachment to Dean.
I really enjoyed your meta. It actually makes me feel a little more positive towards S6. Thank you!
