I think two words sum up this ep and it’s…Bloody Hell!

We got the usual opening scene with the  expectation of something nasty but this time it was more sad than horrible. The nasty was to come later!

It was good to see the continuation of Dean worrying about Sam with his phone call to Bobby.
But I have to wonder if Bobby noticed anything about Sam earlier. He didn’t seem to.

Good to see Cas...and I was glad he decided to help find out about Sam even though he seems have his hands full.

At the sister’s house I had to laugh out loud at Sam’s “It’s a new more caring administration.”

Loved Dean’ s questioning look at  Sam’s intense  interrogation of the sister which was followed by Sam’s  subtle  little look at Dean to say “What!”
And then …"See?  Told you so"…without saying a word.

Next - the dentist scene *shudder* Now this was nasty! I closed my eyes at this scene and didn’t see it…but then when I was capping I caught it …bugger!  I was at the dentist yesterday. ..so glad this ep aired afterwards.

We know when we see Dean drinking on his own that things are getting bad. He doesn’t seem to have leant about sharing his innermost fears and still tries to block them out. What’s up with him not telling Lisa the truth!!! I don’t understand. She obviously knows about a lot of Dean’s life as she mentioned the bringing back of Sam from the dead. ..so there’s no holding back with the weirdness in some areas.  So why didn’t he tell her about the vampire thing? Can I smack some sense into him. Can I? Huh, huh, huh.

So Dean’s phoning  Bobby again and this time finding out some truths he’d rather not have heard. So…Bobby gets time for a pedicure…and has the hots for the pedicurist.  TMI Bobby but funny as hell. Not so funny knowing you have a favourite. I thought you were like a father to them both.  Obviously not. That makes me sad.

Lisa’s phone call - not surprising what she said after everything  they’d been through in the past year.  Lisa’s right - Dean and Sam have a tangled life of pain and misery.  And good for her for not wanting to be part of it.

Interestingly…despite last week’s ep when doubt’s been thrown on Sam’s intentions, he still wants to make sure  Dean doesn’t get killed by Veritas. So whatever is going on with him he does seem genuinely interested in keeping his brother from serious harm.

And Sam sits there all night in front of his laptop totally focussed on the job. It’s like the old Sam plus a bit of something extra.   I did notice he took his shirt off. *big sigh* revealing the grey t-shirt of yum.
I wonder if Dean ate all  night. That guy’s stomach is a bottomless pit!

So off they go to find the goddess.

Love Dean‘s line. “I’m sure inside it’s chock full of creep.”

I did kind of wonder at them walking straight  into a goddess’ lair with just knives dipped in blood. They know how powerful gods can be and here they are asking for trouble. And they got it of course.

All nicely tied up.  Hmmm… now, where was I?

I had to close my eyes with the tongue bit...bleugh!.

Veritas questions to Dean:  it really wasn’t a surprise to hear his answers and when he said Sam was just like him you could feel the misery just oozing out of him. He didn’t like it.

Interesting when Veritas questioned Sam though.  He lied and she was shocked . That can’t happen very often then. She said he wasn’t human and  for the time being we don’t know if he is or not. Sam looked as shocked as Dean at that.
So Sam  eventually admits that’s  something’s not right with him  and we still don’t know if he’s lying or not…but what he said makes sense. It ties in with everything we’ve seen so far. And he pleads for help.

I know Dean been through a lot; he’d been drinking;  he had to listen to Lisa say what she did but I’m disappointed to see Dean pummel Sam into unconsciousness

I’ve mixed feelings here.  On the one hand I love it when they  fight but… this wasn’t a fight, it was ugly. It was a one sided  beating,  with Dean pretty much taking all his frustrations out on Sam.  He can’t use the excuse of being possessed or  being hopped up on demon blood either;  it was plain ol’ human anger getting the better of him. He was an animal....and not the sexy kind.

Maybe the writers wanted to show how Dean had reverted back to his old S1 self. But I’m a bit disappointed he hasn’t been allowed  to grow past this smacking of Sam when the mood takes him.  A  couple of punches would have been enough  to make the  point but he totally lost control of himself.  Shame. I’d been feeling for Dean in theses S6 eps but I‘ve lost that for the moment.

Anyway I was left numb.

Although Sam does look gorgeous all bloody. Yeah like I said …mixed feelings.

Next weeks ep can’t come soon enough.

I totally noticed those looks too. In fact the entire episode was full of them.

I'm gonna totally disagree with you, I think Dean was letting Sam off lightly by just beating him unconscious. Because of Sam's actions, both Lisa and Ben could easily have died if Dean had had just a little less self-control. And then for him to just shrug it off with an 'oops, my bad'!! he's lucky that is all Dean did.

He might be without emotions at the moment, but he still knows right from wrong, and after making such a potentially fatal mistake the very least he should have done was tell Dean that he'd come back from the cage damaged, and he seems to be making some questionable decisions.

Sam KNOWS that Dean went to Hell to save him, and continued to love and try to save him through (admittedly not without some anger and fights) blood addiction, freeing Lucifer and finally becoming Lucifer. So there is no way that Dean would have abandoned him.

Sam didn't even try to defend himself from that beat down, cos he knows he deserved it.

That's OK...disagree away.
As for Sam being responsible for Lisa and Ben possible demise.. I'm afraid Dean has to take most of the blame there. It was his choice to visit them when he was choc full of vampire blood. He put them in danger. He hadn't lost the ability to think for himself. He's annoyed with himself because he knows that.

Yes Sam could and should have told Dean he thought he was damaged but that's not what either of them do. They keep their fears all hidden inside.

That's the thing...Sam doesn't know right from wrong, he's in a void at the moment and Dean already knows something's wrong with him. Sam saved the world so I reckon he deserves some leeway here even if his behaviour is questionable. He certainly doesn't deserve being beaten to a pulp.

Thank you for your insight! I agree that Dean's actions at the end of the episode were uncalled for and a one-sided beatdown. And since I spent last night's episode with fans who were egging Dean on the entire way, well... you can see why I'm grateful someone else sees my point of view and isn't happy with Dean right now.

I can see why you'd be a bit disturbed by that.
I find it upsetting to see someone I think of as a hero (Dean) beating someone senseless who's asked for help, whoever it is. I'm hoping that Dean has to deal with how he's behaved at some point.

I agree with you about Dean beating the shit out of Sam. It was a little much. I understand his feelings about Sam allowing him to be turned, but that wasn't the core issue in their conversation. The issue was Sam admitting that he can't feel human emotions. This Sam isn't the Sam we saw in Mystery Spot and I Know What You Did Last Summer. That Sam was pushing the emotions deep down so they wouldn't hurt him and he could focus on the mission, which is what I originally thought was going on in this season. But it's not. This Sam is incapable of human emotions. I would think Dean would be...I don't know, not out of control angry, and maybe a tad relieved, to find out that although the man in front of him is Sam in mind and body and not a supernatural creature to deal with there is still a reason why Sam has been acting this way and it is not simply that Sam has turned into a total asshole.

And I think the most important line in the entire episode is that Sam asks for help. He doesn't want to be this way-not really. He knows something is missing and has finally accepted that although he may be a better hunter without it and life is easier this way, it is ultimately a bad thing. And what does he do? He asks his big brother for help.

Of course there is the question of whether there is more going on...which there probably is. And I know I will have more thoughts after a re-watch

I also thought that Dean would have been relieved to have Sam finally admit there was something wrong. But after thinking about it some more I think the writers maybe going somewhere with it. I don't think it was meant to be a normal reaction on Dean's part...and I don't think he'll be able to justify it to himself later on.

This was a really enjoyable review - thanks! :D

As for the last scene, I agree that it was uncalled for, and that Dean lost control, but that actually makes me feel for him more because it's so understandable that he lost control. He's been through so much, and now he's lost Lisa etc etc - I imagine he meant to give Sam an arguably well-deserved punch and then just couldn't stop. Doesn't make it right, but I don't think Dean would argue for a second that it was.

'Bloody Hell' is an excellent summary! XD

Thank you :)

It's going to be really interesting how this all pans out. I hope it's not glossed over though. I haven't been this upset with Dean since he dropped his necklace in the bin. :D
