So...what actually is a soul?
Enquiring minds need to know. :)
Spoilers for Spn Season 6
I don’t know if the writers will ever actually define what they believe the soul is….so I think we have to make a few assumptions of our own.
Bobby was busy, so off I go and do a bit of research on what the soul means or what it is or could be and the ideas are many and varied. In fact the show could have decided on just about anything.
Various religious thoughts and doctrine believe the soul to be the very essence of a person, the life force; the actual person. So without it you're dead.
We know this isn’t the case here. Sam is very much alive.
He has his memories and a few of his old mannerisms and from what we've seen can survive pretty much as a member of the human race without too much trouble. He eats, smiles, laughs, feels anger and enjoys his late night encounters. What he doesn’t have is that part of a person which grows from the moment we’re born. All those things which happen to us aren’t just events logged in our brains to be recalled whenever we need them. We learn and grown from them. We become who we are because of how we react to our lives. The good and the bad. In other words we have a heart. Sam at the moment doesn't have that. He remembers growing up with Dean but has none of the feelings that accompany them.
So he’s everything he was before but stripped of his humanity. This of course makes him the perfect hunter...and heartless killer. Robo!Sam.
Psychopaths for instance don’t have any empathy with others or any moral ethics. This includes lying and manipulating others for their own ends.
Apparently we start to empathise at around 1 year of age and then go on to learn right from wrong and so on. It seems to me that the Spn soul is something along these lines. So we have a Sammy who’s been stripped of all the things he’s learned from his experiences since he was born. So if that’s what a soul is then there’s nothing to stop him from learning that all again.
There's one religion that believes that we’re born without a soul and acquire one when living a good life...so that on death you actually have your new soul to be able to go to heaven!.
At the moment Sam’s like...well he’s like…an overgrown toddler learning how to feel and empathise again. Or then again maybe he's more like The Tinman - someone without a heart.
What if he starts the ball rolling by actually start to feel something for Dean, say by watching Dean risk his life for him...he empathises and it triggers the start of his own feelings. Perhaps Sam’s soul will return of it’s own accord.
In fact I really like that Dean could create the conditions with his own selfless actions which in turn causes Sam to feel for his brother again…and therefore triggers off some kind of Heavenly reaction which brings back his soul. Their brotherly love conquering all. Again! Plus maybe it will bring some healing to them both.
