So... a change of pace from the previous "Plucky's" and a lot harder to collect my thoughts and what-not. Good thing it's another hellatus then.... I've had to re-watch it more than a few times.

Like most of this show you can watch and enjoy it as it comes or delve a bit deeper.

I'll warn you now...I ramble a bit with this one!

This one gets down with the darkness that can lurk in humans. Not surprising really with it being written by Ben Edlund. He gives us a peek inside the human psyche where it's getting darker for Sam and Dean. Especially for Sam, because in a moment of weakness as he desperately tries to find his brother, he acknowledges Luciferwhich lets him in. Now he can't get rid of him.

We kind of know that Sam has been keeping a grip on his hallucinations since episode 2 when Dean successfully gets him to recognise that physical pain can determine what's real and what's not. But this episode we're treated to some delicious scenes with him taunting Sam. I have such love/hate for this guy. Mark Pellingro is superb. And his scenes with Sam are fantastic.

The episode began with a flashback sequence..

In the first few minutes, it threw me. I spent so much of that time trying to decide where it fit in the timeline, I didn't notice that Dean was wearing the Samulet! Yay! Shame on me. But there it was and that was nice.

But I did notice the Impala. Hello baby!

With the time line:

I know it said 4 years earlier but for me that's a bit of a grey area, what with the time jump to S6 and time in hell etc. Apparently Jim Michaels tweeted that this takes place in Season 3. Er...sorry but I can't picture that at all. There's the scene in the preview with Lilith taunting Dean holding the bible in Yellow Fever. So it should be after that. I reckon it was somewhere around After School Special, (4 x 13) because I have caps of Sam with the same jacket and also they've tried to make his hair as similar as possible. Although it seems likely to have occurred after On the Head of a Pin (4 x 16) because Dean seemed to relish the torturing...and from what I can remember he really didn't want to get into that until after that episode. Maybe I need to revisit Season 3 again..

Repo Man

After School Special

Anyway... I'm stubborn and refuse to believe it's Season 3. So Season 4 it is then! :)

Okay..I couldn't resist. I've revisited Season 3 again. Here's are some caps of him in Malleus Maleficarum. (3 x 9).

Peekage!

Hmmmm.  Okay maybe, just maybe...

Moving on...

It's great to see Lucifer back. Or should I say the figment of Sam's subconscious. So he really does speak with forked tongue! Hahaha! Plus with that forked tongue he has some great lines. Probably some of the best in the ep. And he's getting so camp with it as well. The little devil!

We get to see what Sam has had to put up with these past months. Lucifer hanging around...teasing, goading...generally causing him as much grief as possible I imagine. Poor Sam.

Following Sam to the library he continues his verbal sniping.

"Oh come on Sam pay attention to me I'm bored.."

It's kind of scary that Sam wasn't particularly shocked at seeing all those people bashing their heads on the tables to a bloody mess. Any normal person would have totally freaked out. Both him and Dean have seen so much. Maybe Lucifer also played lots of those kind of games with him in the cage that's left him numb.

In the end Sam tells Lucifer to shut up when he says that Dean's dead.

“He said shut up to me”

With Lucifer still following Sam they end up at Nora's.

Luci now seems to have more of a hold over Sam, pushing him to be tougher...nastier.

Luci's impatient as he watched Sam interrogate Nora but really pleased when Sam goes darker.

"You're giving me the chills"

Having Jeffrey turning out to be a serial killer and not a monster, was a great twist. Like in the Benders, Dean said “Demons I get, humans are crazy!” And although he kept looking at Jeffrey in the warehouse I don't think he had any inkling that he was bad. That really took him by surprise.

But like Dean, I'd never consider the idea that demons would actively seek out humans with the potential for evil, and that these humans would enjoy demonic possession! Because that's not only crazy but creepy!

I like the comparisons between Dean, Sam and Jeffrey here.

Dean seems to need his own personal demons to function but now it's wearing him down. Whether he can keep going like everyone keeps telling him to...remains to be seen. My first thought was that Dean was describing himself when he was talking about Jeffrey. And how Jeffrey said he was a wreck, an emotional shell, a drunk and suicidal. They are all things Dean is at the moment but he's handling it. Just.

Jeffrey goes to great lengths to get back his real demon, because it gave him a purpose and power. He could have lived his life without his demon but didn't want to because he feels a lesser person without it.

And Sam seems to want to reject his own demon, or fallen angel, but does he? Lucifer keeps suggesting that he needs and wants him.

Sam is most definitely moving towards buckets of crazy...and I'm kind of hoping that Lucifer does have a connection to Sam from the cage...because then hopefully he can then have that connection cut and give Sam a chance to get his sanity back. Otherwise I can't see how he can become well, and become a functioning person without a long spell in psyche care.

Dean and Sam are heroes, not your ordinary men in the street who would have buckled under the strain by now. So I don't have a problem with them being able to cope with everything that's being thrown at them. But something has to give and I guess it's coming...

Don't trust him Dean....Ack, too late!

Oh my...that's a big knife...oh yes...Ruby's knife?

Looney Jeffrey summons the demon and to his annoyance it takes possession of Nora's son.
As he breaks from his restraints, anyone else think -  Meg!Sam in Born Under a Bad Sign?

I love how demons don't care about gender. Do they have a gender? Meg didn't care who she sexually taunted: Sam, Dean then Jo. This demon seemed happy to string Jeffrey along when it suited him and drop him like a fickle boyfriend.

Who drew the Devil's Trap on the ceiling?
Jeffrey? And why would he have done that?
I've now watched that scene a few times and I believe it's  Sam and Nora. The actual trap is quite a way from where Dean and Nora's son are tied up...so they could have easily drawn it without detection. Where they got the ladder from though is another story. I don't think we're meant to think that much! But out there in fandom I've heard theories of Bobby's ghost or Crowley. Hmmmm.

And...

...nearly forgot..I see Dean chose the bed furthest from the door in the motel. Maybe he's not bothered about being the big brother any more. Another sign he's had enough?

He falls down to have a well earned sleep, Sam's not getting off so lightly.

God dammit Lucifer...give Sammy a break!

Those last scenes gave me chills. As Sam flinched as the flames licked around him...I get the feeling that that wasn't the first time Sam had heard “Good Morning Vietnam” from Lucifer.

Maybe that was the cry Lucifer used before he tortured Sam's each time.

And that laugh of Luci's.....

Poor, poor Sam.
